Like installation of RAM, graphic cards are relatively straight-forward to install. Firstly, you must recognise the difference and PCI graphic card and AGP graphic card for they require different slots.
To install a graphic card:
- If you are using an onboard graphic card, disconnect the display cable.
- If you are using a graphic card, disconnect any connections, and remove the screws that hold the graphic card in place and gently remove the card.
- You may have to remove the rear bracket of the chassis to fit the graphic card in. Once you have removed it (be careful of sharp edges!), slot the card in.
- Gently insert the card and push down. See if the card has fully penetrated the PCI/AGP slot. The holding mechanism should fit the grooves at the side of the graphic card if it has been inserted properly.
- After it is firmly secure, insert a screw through the bracket of the chassis.
- If your graphic card has a fan, locate any power connectors that may be there. You may seriously damage your card if you do not connect a power supply. You do not want to fry you card.
- Connect the card to your monitor and start up your computer.
Once windows starts up, you should see it prompting you that it has detected new hardware. Proceed to install any drivers (which should come in a CD along with your graphic card) that are necessary.
You may also require a driver update. Refer to the manufacturer’s website for further details.
