First and foremost, you need to decide if your new hard disk is going to replace your current one, or just be a back up. You need to set the jumper cables so that your computer will treat the drives accordingly.

This should be the back view of your hard disk.

If you are going to set your new hard disk as your main drive, set it to MASTER.

If it is going to be your back up drive, set it to SLAVE.

Once that’s done, you are ready to install your new hard disk

Remove the current drive in the chassis.

Remove the IDE cable, power cable and all the holding screws to do so.

  • Connect the IDE cable to the new hard disk.

  • Connect the power cable.

Before you replace the CPU cover, start up and access BIOS. If you have installed your hard disk, BIOS should detect correctly the drive slave and whether it’s a master or a slave.

Format the drive once before using. As you can see, it’s not that hard to replace or add a new drive.
