Peripherals play a crucial part input of information into your system. No point in having the most impressive CPU specs if you mouse doesn’t work properly or you are uncomfortable with your keyboard.

Keyboards

Installation of keyboards is easy. Just match the output of the keyboard to the input at the back of your CPU. Or if your keyboard has USB output, you should connect to the USB input at the back of you CPU. Leave the front USB connections for other devices.

An infrared wireless keyboard would probably require you to align the keyboard and the receiver. A wireless keyboard using radio frequency does not have alignment issues though.

Wireless keyboards do have a range where it is effective, so if your keyboard suddenly seems ineffective, move nearer.

Mouse

Mice are pointing devices which are integral in inputting information. Choose a mouse which is comfortable. A mouse with a nice design is useless if your hand hurts after using it for an extended period.

For mice, get a wheel mouse. Although it is not used in many applications, it is useful (and easier) when surfing the net. As you look through those long pages which have you scrolling down more often than not, you will appreciate the wheel.

A mouse is easy to install. Just plug it to its connection at the back of the CPU. Once you startup, you should be able to move the mouse pointer. If not, try reconnecting and connecting again.

If it still doesn’t work, get another mouse.

Game controllers

Game controller devices, like keyboards and mice, are easy to install. Just plug the controller into the USB port(for USB controlers) or game pad port.

However, once you have installed the controller, you need to configure it for the games you are playing.

  • Install the latest version of Direct X if your controller doesn’t work. Read the FAQ for issues which may affect you.

  • Install your soundcard driver that may have come with your soundcard. Sometimes the driver provided by Windows may cause your controller to have certain functions unavailable.

  • On older systems, you may have to update the BIOS. Refer to your motherboard’s manufacturer website for further information on how to update BIOS.
